The road north

We’re heading back to the North Sector for a couple of days of winter glamping. This will be Chuck’s first go, though, in good company with Iyad and the veteran Tracy.

I think Tracy’s trying to hide the THIRD toboggan

Slow start

The weather forecast was not looking good, nor was getting all our gear in Iyad’s vehicle. With Tracy and Iyad packed it seemed like we’d have to sacrifice Tracy’s enormous pillow. I worry too much as in the end it all fit and we’re on our way in the rain.

Next, get everything in the the toboggans. Everyone agrees that walking in is the way to go. The trail is thinly covered and icy. This part goes very smoothly.

Wood burning stoves

This is my fourth time in these tents. Each time, the newbie thinks they’ll freeze if they don’t pack the stove for bedtime.

Chuck was said newbie this trip.

I’m on the top bunk and I’m woken to giggling from below. Then the blast hits me. It’s unbelievable and Chuck’s still laughing and Iyad’s sleeping. I end up on the floor where the temperature is likely still around 35°C.

Great conversation

Before the global warming event, Tracy joined our tent for snicks and beer. You know you’re with great friends when there’s no subject that is off the table. Bottom line, we’ve all got our issues and our passions and I really felt the warmth in the room.

Con carne

Tracy (with Pete’s help) brought up the most incredible steaks and Charles cooked then to perfection. Add some beer and red wine and I was feeling so spoilt.

Next morning Tracy’s on it again with percolated coffee and more discussion around the fire.

Somehow, after my missing the deadline to have water delivered, Chuck and Iyad agree to walk in to get water while Tracy and I get in a ski. Pretty good deal. And a surprisingly good ski considering the previous day’s weather.

Water mission

Snow’s a comin

We say goodbye to Tracy and Iyad, it’s dark and snow is starting to fall. I’m already coaching Chuck on the fire; we’re not having a repeat blaze.

The sun shone on day two!

Groomer!

And snow it did, about 10 cm and the groomer has gone by our front door. We pack up after a Farkel match (Chuck won) then head back to meet up with Penny who’s graciously agreed to pick us up. What a transition from ice to fluffy white stuff. The crowds are huge with families and friends returning from their overnighters. And…

A Ryan sighting to boot!

We meet up with Penny at P20—I mean P19 😠—pack the car and head home. I’d have to say that once again, the weather gods have cooperated, especially given the gloomy forecast.

After a much cooler sleep
